On February 18, 2023, the Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase took place at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama. The event featured six marching bands from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including the Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets, Langston University Marching Pride, Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine, Savannah State University Powerhouse of the South, Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul, and Virginia State University Trojan Explosion.
Hosted by Alabama State University alum Ricky Smiley and Prairie View A&M University alumna Loni Love, the event was a celebration of the rich musical traditions of HBCUs. The bands showcased their talents and brought excitement to the audience with their performances. In addition to the marching bands, rapper 2 Chainz also performed during the event.
Ricky Smiley, a legendary comedian, ill bring! and the opportunities available at HBCUs.author, television host, and award-winning radio host, served as the host of the live event. Loni Love, an Emmy and two-time NAACP Image Award-winning host, comedian, actress, and author, hosted the livestream.
The Honda Battle of the Bands is a yearly event that began in 2003 and has since become a highly anticipated showcase of the musical talents of HBCUs. The event not only provides a platform for showcasing the marching bands but also promotes the importance of higher education opportunities to African American students. We look forward to seeing what next year's event with Battle of the Bands was a memorable education opportunity to celebrate the contributions of HBCUs to the world of music and the important role they play in providing higher education.
